SOLID RESULTS FOR DARYL DELEON AS BTCC REACHES HALFWAY POINT AT OULTON PARK
Daryl DeLeon was back in the thick of the action when the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) visited Oulton Park for Round 5 of the 2024 season. The Filipino-British driver got his elbows out and fought his way to strong 12th and 13th place finishes, adding to his points tally for the season.
Running the 3.616 km Island Circuit layout, the Un-Limited Motorsport driver commented that the track was newly-resurfaced and needed a bit of getting used to. High temperatures didn’t help as well, which robbed them of some power down the straights. Otherwise the setup of the #18 Duckhams Cupra León was spot-on since Saturday and placed him 14th fastest in Free Practice.
It was just unfortunate that Daryl didn’t advance into the next stages in Qualifying as he suffered from understeer and ended up in P18. While his handling issues persisted into Race 1, the 18-year-old was able to put up a fight and crossed the finish line in P17. But he was later relegated back to 18th where he started after receiving a 10 secs jump start penalty.\
The team made a few setup changes ahead of Race 2, which sorted out Daryl’s handling issues. This allowed him to challenge for position in the ultra-tight roads of Oulton Park. He also benefited from a first lap pile up and ultimately took the chequered flag in P10. However, Daryl received a 2 secs penalty for minor contact on the last lap that dropped him back to 12th in the official standings.
Race 3 saw the entire 20-car grid funnel through the first corner cleanly with Daryl holding onto P12th. He then had to defend for most of the 15 lap race to make it to the finish in 13th with a hard-charging Toyota Corolla GR Sport on his tail.
The 2024 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) takes a 1-month break as it reaches its halfway point. Action resumes on the 27th/28th of July at Croft Circuit for Round 6.
Daryl DeLeon: “A mega weekend at Oulton Park. The car looked mega with its blue-and-yellow Duckhams livery, the crowd was mega, and our results were mega as well. Really happy with the car and it felt good right from FP1 on Saturday. Finishing P12 and P13 allowed us to haul points and it was a good way to end half of the year. I just can’t wait to get back out in the car in a month’s time at Croft.”
