This Cookie Policy explains the cookies and similar technologies used on this website, what they do, and how you can control them. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal information more generally.

1. What cookies are

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They let a site remember things such as the choices you have made. Similar technologies include local storage, pixels and tags, and this policy covers those too.

A cookie is first-party if it is set by this website, and third-party if it is set by another service the site uses.

2. The cookies we use

Essential

One cookie is set as soon as you make a choice in the cookie banner. It is essential, because without it we cannot remember your decision and would have to ask again on every page.

• dk_cookie_consent, set by this website, which records your cookie choices, including whether you have turned analytics off. It lasts six months, after which we ask again.

Our hosting provider may also set short-lived cookies where they are needed for security, load balancing or to protect forms from automated abuse. These are set only where necessary to deliver the site to you.

Analytics, on unless you turn it off

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are useful and how people move through the site, so we can improve it. It is on unless you turn it off, and it sets:

• _ga, which distinguishes one browser from another, lasting up to two years
• _ga followed by a property identifier, which Google Analytics uses to maintain the session, lasting up to two years

We have IP anonymisation switched on, so the address your device connects from is truncated by Google before it is stored. Google processes this information only on our behalf, to produce these statistics for us: it is not used for advertising, not combined with other information, and not shared for Google's own purposes. If you turn analytics off, these cookies are no longer set or read.

We can do this without asking first because UK law allows cookies that are used only to collect statistics to improve a website, as long as we explain them and you can turn them off (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025). Turning analytics off makes no difference to what you can do on the site.

Measurement that uses no cookies

We also use Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights to measure page performance. Both are designed to work without cookies and without identifying individual visitors, so nothing is stored on your device for them.

Advertising

Some websites let advertising networks place cookies that follow you from site to site, so you are shown their adverts elsewhere. This website does not. Nothing you do here is used to target advertising to you somewhere else.

We do measure whether our own advertising leads to genuine enquiries, but that happens on our servers when an enquiry form is submitted, not in your browser. The Privacy Policy explains what is shared and in what form.

If we add an advertising tag to this site in future, it will be listed on this page and will only load if you agree to it.

Editors and staff

If you are signed in to the content management system as an editor, a cookie is set so you can preview unpublished pages. It applies only to staff and never to ordinary visitors.

3. Your choices

Essential cookies are set without asking, because the site cannot work correctly without them. Analytics cookies are set unless you turn them off. Everything else, including any advertising, is set only if you agree.

You can turn analytics off, and accept or reject other non-essential cookies, when the banner appears, and you can change your decision at any time using Cookie settings at the foot of every page. Turning analytics off does not limit anything you can do here.

We ask again after six months, so a decision you made long ago does not stand indefinitely.

4. Managing cookies in your browser

You can also view, delete or block cookies through your browser settings. The steps vary by browser, and your browser's help pages explain them. Blocking all cookies will stop us remembering your consent choice, so the banner will reappear.

5. Changes to this policy

We update this policy when the cookies or technologies used on the site change. The date it was last updated is shown at the top of the page.
